Powell & Meadows Insurance Agency, Inc. has been a continuous business for over 117 years, though not always under the Powell & Meadows Insurance Agency name. The agency has, however, always been locally owned.

In the late 1800s, Mr. W. T. Askew began writing of insurance policies for the Home Insurance Company. He continued until 1908 and then sold to Sam Pickering. In 1920, Frank Powell joined the Pickering Agency and it became Pickering & Powell. The agency operated under several variations of the name until 1962 when Mike Meadows joined D. Frank Powell and the name changed to Powell & Meadows Insurance Agency. In 1965, Mike became the sole owner after D. Frank retired and the first employee for Powell & Meadows Insurance Agency was hired.

The office was located over the old Smith County Bank building on Main Street in Carthagewhere they stayed for three years.

In 1968, the building at 608 Main Street was built (currently occupied by Shoulders TV & Repair) and jointly occupied by Powell & Meadows Insurance and Carthage Flower Shop.

In January of 1972, the Gordon Oldham Insurance Agency merged with Powell & Meadows. On February 8th of 1974 Powell & Meadows moved into its current locationat 910 North Main Street, Carthage, Tennessee. From 1981 to 1982 the Draper Sircy Agency and the Thomas Amonette Agency were acquired.

Philip Piper joined the agency in June of 1986 after working for USF&G Insurance Company in Nashville, TN and Bennett & Edwards Insurance Agency of Kingsport, TN. Phillip became Mike Meadow’s partner in 1992. Then in 1998 Mike Meadows retired and Phillip Piper became the sole owner.

During the late 1900s Powell & Meadows purchased 3 independently owned insurance agencies in Lafayette, TN and opened a branch in Macon County. In 1992, a Lebanon, TN branch officewas opened to serve the Wilson County area.

Raymond Edwards Joined the business in August 1999 and became the minority partner in July 2004. He currently manages the Lebanon branch.

In July of 2008, Underwood Financial Services was purchased by Powell & Meadows to enhance the existing life and health insurance productsas well as to provide financial and investment services.

Presently Powell & Meadows Insurance Agency, Inc. has a highly trained and experienced staff with over 360 years of insurance experience. With a new building addition to our Lebanon branch and a new facility opened in 2011 in Carthage, TNPowell & Meadows has positioned itself for improved customer service and has created the opportunity to meet the growing insurance and financial needs of this communityand surrounding communities.
